How do I can tell whether my optical drive is IDE or SATA?

My dvd drive has packed in and I’m thinking of buying a new one, but I don’t know whether to get an IDE or SATA dvd drive. I’ll buy whichever one based on what I have now, but I’m not sure how to find out.

Have a look at the connector on the back of it. An IDE drive has a large ribbon cable going to a connector about 5cm long. A sata drive has a small ribbon cable going to a connector about 2cm long.

Thats the easiest way.
