can i just swap the cd rom drive in my desktop pc with a spare dvd rom that i have or do i need the drivers?
i have a scrap computer and i want to take the dvd drive out and install it in my desktop pc. it already has a CD rom and a CD RW drive, i was planning to unplug the CD rom and plug in the DVD drive. will it work or will it need a driver disk?
Provided that the drives being swapped are both IDE or are both SATA, then the half answers given so far are broadly correct.
On first boot after installing the new drive, you may need to enter the BIOS (press DEL usually) and save settings with the newly recognised drive.
If both drives are SATA, then just use the existing power and signal leads – no problem.
If both drives are IDE, then you will need to ensure that the DVD drive is set the same way as the CD drive: either slave; master or cable select. Link below relates to Western Digital drives – google for whatever make yours is…
If one drive is SATA and one IDE, then provided the motherboard on your desktop PC has the necessary connector for signal, and your PSU has a suitable power connector free – just pop it in… using the leads from the scrap PC.
